Any new mom knows that the first venture out of the house can be extremely nerve-wracking. You’ve been holed up at home for a while, safe and warm with your newborn, and the thought of leaving the safety of home for the unknown is understandably worrisome.

Will the baby start crying? Will I forget something? What if I run out of diapers?

Usually the new mom returns home all in one piece and can relax. Unfortunately, though, sometimes that first outing really is traumatizing.

Such was the case for new mom Lucy Hatami.

Lucy hadn’t been out much since her 8-month-old son was born, but she decided that she wanted to get dressed and go out for a proper meal.

While she was at dinner her baby started crying. As she desperately tried to calm him down, she heard a young man sitting at a nearby table mutter something under his breath.

“I wish she’d shut that thing up!” he said.

Lucy was mortified. She tried to think of something to say to the man to defend her baby.

Before she could, though, another man at the other table, who turned out to be the first man’s father, clipped him on the year and said something that left Lucy both stunned and incredibly grateful.

“What and you think you were perfect? You were a right little sod,” he said. “Now stop being a brat, go up there and apologize to her and offer to get her breakfast as she clearly has her hands full!”

Lucy was touched that the older gentleman was so sensitive to her needs. Even though it looked like it had been a while since he was a parent, he hadn’t forgotten how difficult it could be, and he was ready to defend this young mom.

Lucy got her nice breakfast with a “lovely coffee,” and hopefully that young man will never forget the lesson he learned that day!
