Paula Godwin from Anthem, AZ, was up bright and early to take a hike with her two dogs – Todd and Cooper – on Friday, June 29th. It was a beautiful morning, but it ended quite differently than she expected.

Everything happened so fast. At first, Paula didn’t even notice something sitting on the road in front of her. “It was a beautiful morning but as we were walking down the hill I literally almost stepped on a mf rattlesnake,” Godwin wrote in a Facebook post. “But my hero of a puppy Todd saved me.”

Todd’s doing so well he is a wonder to me how he is healing . Just a thank you to all the support Your kindness and support is truly a blessing ?❤️?

The 6-month-old Golden Retriever proved that dog really is man’s best friend by jumping between his owner and the dangerous reptile, taking the bite that was certainly meant for his human. “He jumped right in front of my leg were I surely would have got bit. Since the rattlesnake bit the poor pup right on the face, it quickly started to swell up. Paula Godwin rushed Todd to the nearest veterinarian clinic where the vet gave him a shot of anti-venom and kept him for the rest of the day to monitor his condition.

Todd’s owner has kept her Facebook up to speed with the latest on the hero dog’s condition. Paula recently shared a picture of Todd in the park saying that her puppy is recovering fine and is already back on his feet. “My sweet Todd for sure is my hero and I feel I jave to say that the man up stairs surely is watching out for me to. Praise to him too.
