There are some people who think animals don’t have sacrificial tendencies and are only concerned about their own survival, but anyone who sees this video will immediately know that’s not the case.

In fact, this proves that animals are not only loyal and selfless, but they will put their own lives in danger to protect the ones they love!

This harrowing scene took place on December 25, 2016, when a train conductor spotted something on the tracks outside of Tseglovka, Ukraine, that left him stunned.

Two dogs were sitting on the tracks, but they didn’t move when the train came right at them.

Knowing there must be more to the story, the conductor told some locals about what he had seen and they went to check it out.

When Denis Malafeyev got to the scene, he couldn’t believe his eyes. One of the dogs, a female named Lucy, was injured and had gotten stuck on the tracks. The other dog, named Panda, who they later found out was Lucy’s brother, had refused to leave her side, even as the trains raced toward them.

Each time a train came by, Panda would hold Lucy’s head down as the train barrelled over them, just narrowly missing the two dogs. Even after the trains had passed, Panda stayed by Lucy’s side, covering her with his body to keep her warm.

“The male dog heard the sound of the approaching train, came close to the female dog and laid down next to her,” Denis said. “Both of them pushed their heads towards the ground, and let the train pass.”

When Denis first tried to help Lucy, Panda was understandably scared and protective of his sister and wouldn’t let anyone get near her. For two days rescuers tried to figure out how to help the dogs, and for that entire time Panda stayed right by Lucy’s side.

“The male dog was doing this for two days in a row,” Denis said later. “Think about it. He was keeping her warm.”

“I don’t know what to call this,” he added. “Instinct, love, friendship, loyalty? One thing I know for sure, not all the people would do the same as this.”

Finally, rescuers were able to get to the dogs and free Lucy from the tracks. Both Lucy and Panda were brought to a local shelter where they were taken care of and treated for injuries.

Denis posted a video of the harrowing experience on Facebook, and amazingly the dogs’ owner saw it, found the dogs at the shelter, and was able to take them home to recover.

Say what you will about animals, but we think Panda is a true hero. Despite the danger and discomfort, he wasn’t about to leave his sister’s side, and his bravery and self-sacrifice ultimately saved her life.

We can all learn something from Panda.
