A self-described “tired mom” of three kids from New York, Sara Moore Gruver decided to spread some hope and faith “in a world that can be so dark some days.” She made a post to Facebook that she thought only her friends would enjoy, but then it went mega-viral, reaching over 34,600 shares to date since it’s original post.
The mom shared the story of a day when she and her kids were heading back home from grocery shopping. The kids begged for her to stop for ice cream, but the family was low on funds. Gruver had $20 to her name. She had to say no, noting they had all the food they needed at home.
As young kids are often prone to do, they threw a fit, crying and making drama. These kids were also especially determined: They would get that ice cream one way or another, even if they had to seek out a higher authority than Mom.
Gruver heard this from the backseat:
“God, we’d really love some ice cream. Is there any way you can give mommy some money so we can get some ice cream tonight? We know you can. Thank you.”
Mom explained that God probably has bigger concerns than ice cream at the moment.
Oh good grief. “Guys,” I said, “God isn’t going to drop money on our door step so you two can get ice cream. He’s BUSY right now with natural disasters.”
Undeterred, her son Josh confidently doubled-down.
“Nope,” Josh said. “God said you’ll have plenty of money for ice cream and to give some to the natural disaster people.”
A slightly perplexed Mom responded:
“Josh…it doesn’t work that way,” I started, and then gave up. And then we got home.
Then the story takes an amazing turn. When the family arrives back home, Gruver is amazed to find a check waiting literally on her doorstep. She had overpaid a student loan, and a check to reimburse her for $123 is suddenly in her hands. The loan was overpaid way back in 2007, but today at that exact moment is when she would receive it.
Gruver recalled the priceless reaction of her kids. They knew it all along:
“The kids were not surprised. God was not surprised. They got ice cream. The Red Cross got a donation.And Mom remembered, yet again, what it means to have the faith of a child.”
