When Rodney Smith Jr. found out that a 93-year-old woman in his community had been trying to mow her own lawn by herself, he knew he had to do something.

He gathered some of the guys that are part of his Raising Men Lawn Care team and, not only did they mow her lawn, they committed to mowing it for her every two weeks!

A photo of the young men with the woman has been going viral.

Rodney, a student at Alabama A&M University, started Raising Men when he saw some needs in his community. Not only were there people who needed help with their lawn care, but there were also a lot of young boys and men with no positive role models or influences in their lives. He knew he could help make a positive difference in his community.

He started Raising Men in 2015 in an effort to “establish an inspiring program to keep our young men and boys (young women and girls) on a positive path while learning and understanding their value in society.” Their objective is to help those who don’t have the time or money to take care of their yards themselves.

Since starting the service, the group has mowed over 300 yards for the elderly, disabled, and single mothers in their community.

“I want to restore the importance and understanding of giving back to the community,” Rodney said. “I want to show our children (our future) that by helping others they too will receive a sense of accomplishment, self-esteem, moral value and purpose in themselves.

“The message I want to instill is no matter how young or old, small or tall they are or cultural background they come from, they are capable of whatever they put their mind to.”
