Malissa Sergent Lewis was running late to work at an elementary school when she decided to take a shortcut through the backroads of Kentucky. She had no way of knowing that by doing so she would save a life.

As Malissa drove she saw a black trash bag up ahead in the middle of the road. When she got closer she could see that it was moving. She pulled up alongside it and grabbed her cell phone to record what was happening.

Even though she had no idea what was inside, Malissa knew the bag contained a living creature, so she tore it open. What she found inside made her sick.

It was a puppy. An adorable, lively, and incredibly grateful puppy.

As soon as he saw Malissa’s face, the puppy began wagging his tail as if he knew that everything was going to be okay.

The puppy had a collar on but no identification, so Malissa scooped him up and took him to work with her.

That evening, she and her sons took the puppy to the vet. The vet gave the puppy his shots and told Malissa that he couldn’t be more than 8 weeks old. Thankfully, after an exam, they determined he was healthy.

Malissa posted her video on Facebook along with a message: “If this is your puppy, let me know. If you are the scoundrel who put it in a garbage bag and tossed it on the side of the road…..you’re a sicko”

Both Animal Control and the Sheriff’s Department are trying to determine who would have committed such a heinous act against such a vulnerable animal.

Malissa and her sons have decided to keep the puppy, naming him, appropriately, Hefty.

“He is playful,” she said. “We were just talking about how resilient he was. He romps around playing with his new toys. He’s good natured. Even the day that I brought him into the school where I work the day I found him, he was precious. The guidance counselor, Mrs. Kelly is a big animal lover, she took the pup to visit second grade and the kids loved him.”

Thankfully, Malissa was in the right place at the right time to find Hefty. Now he has a home where he will be loved and cared for for the rest of his life!

Are you glad Malissa stopped to check out that bag? So share this!
