There are few pets more demanding or more rewarding than owning a parrot. We’ve all heard it’s like having a child, and that’s not an exaggeration. Some pet owners don’t have any idea how much care a parrot needs over a lifetime. If they don’t receive the stimulation, interaction, and love that they crave, they can become destructive and fall into a depression, withdrawing and becoming untrusting and fearful.
That’s how Yazhi Yung found Cookie, a Goffin’s cockatoo, known for their intelligence and mischievous nature. Cookie suffered horribly after his owners got a new dog. The two pit bulls didn’t care for Cookie, and the cockatoo suffered for it. Instead of finding a way to accommodate all of the pets, they made the cruel decision to take Cookie down to a small windowless basement. Deprived of sunlight, of interaction, and of companionship, he withdrew from the world.
Fortunately, his owner put him up for adoption, and Yazhi, now 24, came into his life. Although he was scared of humans and unable to trust her, she wouldn’t give up. She believed that if she kept working with him, he would eventually come around.
“When I first saw Cookie, he was really scared of humans and not social at all? But step by step, day by day, we started to have our little bond?”
Yazhi was the perfect person to rehabilitate Cookie. She has other birds, and loves animals. She knows that owning a parrot is a lifetime commitment. Even though he sometimes would bite and was afraid to come out of his shell, her patience and perseverance would pay off.
Posting as Cookie, she wrote:
“✨She wants to tell to all future parrots mommy that we will be their life commitment and sometimes, we are not as perfect as we look?I know, we look pretty darn cute? But you know, a bite here and a bite there, a poop here and a poop there, a scream here and a scream there. All we want is you, because all we have is you❤️ So please, when you promise us a forever home, it will be a forever home?? Pinky promise?✨”
Now, Cookie has become goofy, outgoing, and is having a blast with Yazhi. He’s come so far out of his shell that there is no going back. Watch the amazing video from The Dodo below:
