One thoughtless driver was in for the lesson of a lifetime when he parked his car in front of a fire hydrant in Merced, California.

As fate would have it, a fire did start at a nearby business.

It is crucial for a fire hose to be kept straight while fighting a fire – if there is even one minor kink in the hose it could cut the water supply in half.

Fires can be a matter of life and death, and there is no time to move cars or try to find other methods of working around them.

Deputy fire chief Don Long was on the scene when he heard a loud crash. He looked behind him and saw that his engineer had smashed in the front windows of the car so he could put the hose through it.

“He just took his hydrant wrench and took out the driver’s side, walked over took out the passenger side,” Long said.

A good reminder for us all to pay attention to where we are parking and leave room for the first responders who keep us all safe!
