Losing a child has to be one of the hardest things a family must endure. When kids of any age die unexpectedly, the grief must be compounded tenfold. There are many questions left unanswered; parents can let their heartache overtake them. Or, if you’re like the Brown’s, the family in this story, you can take your pain and create new memories, allowing your child to live on.

Carter Brown died tragically in a car accident one month before his senior prom at James Buchanan High School in Mercersburg, PA. He intended on escorting his girlfriend, Kaylee Suders to the evening’s festivities. Since he wasn’t there to take her, Robert Brown, Carter’s dad stepped in for his late son.

“My son was a sweet, caring kid, and Kaylee is very sweet too, and she is a part of our family,” Robert told the  Centre Daily Times. “When the passing topic of prom came up, I kept thinking my son would want her to go. That prompted me to get the ball rolling.”

Beyond devastated, Kaylee initially didn’t want to attend the dance. She changed her mind when Robert said he’d take her. “I know it would have made Carter happy that I still went, and I know he’s smiling ear to ear at the fact I went with his dad.”

Kelly Brown, Carter’s mother, shared the prom photos on social media. “Add this to the list of reasons why I love my husband… Since Carter couldn’t escort Kaylee to her prom, Robert stepped in. Kaylee, I know Rob wasn’t your first choice for a date, but he will  forever be mine.”

We’re certain Carter is smiling down on everyone who loves him; his father was unselfish and so thoughtful by taking Kaylee to prom. It will be an evening she’ll always remember.
